The Dog-Eat-Dog World of Sewing Machine Dealerships

April 2nd, 2008

I had a very interesting relevation today on the nature of sewing machine dealerships. It all started with my old Babylock serger which I took in for a simple cleaning. Specific names and shops will be replaced with fictional names because I am a frequent buyer of sewing related stuff, and I don’t want to get blackisted for outing anyone. :-)

About 1 month ago, I dropped myBabylock serger off at a shop which happens to be a Janome dealership. This is a shopmy family has usedfor about 15-20 yearsbecause they happen to have a mechanic which is very good with vintage Singers, one of which my grandmother has always had serviced there. It turns out, that during one such servicing that I bought a previously traded in Bernina embroidery machine from them on a whim. It was a steal at their price, after all.

You would think that they would want to keep my business, wouldn’t you? I mean not many people spend that kind of money on a whim …

Well, the drama starts to unfold almost immediately, when I call to find out if my serger is ‘done’. I’m informed by Tim (fictional name) that my serger has a cracked needle plate. He explains that it’s very ‘minor’ and he can tune up and clean the machine as is, but I should know. I instruct him to replace the needle plate, after all I had sold the machine and I want it to be perfect for the new owner. I wait patiently about 2 weeks for a call that the machine is done. I finally call them, and Tim informs me that he has ‘called everywhere’ and he is having ‘difficulty getting the part’ and that I should see if I can get it from Babylock quicker. So I then email Babylock about the part. This is the email I received …

Krystin, Thank you for contacting us.

You need to visit a Baby Lock retailer as all Baby Lock products including parts and accessories are available exclusively from authorized Baby Lock retailers. The part number for the needle plate for the BL402 is part #61384. This can be ordered by any Baby Lock retailer from our Central Parts Division. This part is in stock.

Sincerely,

Lee, Baby Lock USA “

So I read in this email that it is “in stock” and that Tim told me that he also works at a Babylock dealership and would have Bill (fictional name) order it for me. After reading that it was in stock, I don’t worry about it and wait for the call that the machine is fixed.

About 2 weeks of being extremely patient pass. After all, the machine had been sold and paid for, and I’m worried for the poor woman who is anxiously expecting her new bundle-o-joy. I finally break down and call Tim, except that I don’t get Tim. I get some desk lady Amy (fictional). She tells me that he has tried ‘everywhere’ and that ‘no one can get the part’, and that Tim is’on vacation’ and will be back ‘next week’. I immediately know that her story is a big ‘ol pile of donkey dung because I have contacted Babylock and know that a dealer shouldn’t have any problem getting the part. I told her that I was having trouble swallowing her story, and she informs me that Bill at Babylock said that he couldn’t get the part. I told her that I can get the part myself. She told me that she would rather me “just come and get the machine”, and then hung up on me. Mind you, this is the SAME WOMAN that sold me the Bernina embroidery machine!

So I call the first number on the list Babylock sent me, and within 10 min Bob (fictional) has the part ordered. Should be in my hot little hand within a week.

A couple of days later, Joe (fictional) calls me from the shop and tells me I need to get the machine because they can’t fix it without the needleplate, and cannot get the part. I tell him that I had no problem getting the part and that I had told Amy I would get it myself. It should be in any day now.

It turned out, according to Bob (at Babylock who ordered the part) that the part was backordered from LA and would come from Illinois. Just a couple more days, no problem - except that Joe calls me from the shop a couple of days later. He tells me that I need to come get my machine because it is taking up precious room. You can imagine my shock after all the hoops they are making me jump through, and considering the amount of money I’ve dropped in their shop. I was completely aghast that they would treat me this way!! After all, I HAD TO GET THE PART MYSELF and was exhibiting a great deal of patience on my part with them … not to mention that the poor lady who bought the machine was also getting anxious.

So I call Bob about the part, and he says it’s in. I call Joe back and tell him I’m coming to get the machine and take it to Bob. When I get there Joe blames Bill (at Babylock, Tim’s other boss) for ‘dropping the ball’. He says they are happy to fix my machine and will call the shop which has the part. I smell a rat and take the machine anyway.

When I get to Bob’s shop, I find Bill there!! It turns out that Bill works at TWO shops, and that he happens to be Tim’s boss at the OTHER shop. He tells me that Tim NEVER asked him about any part, and hasn’t talked to him, or seen him for three weeks!!

Fundementally, I’m happy the machine is at a Babylock shop now. I would have taken it there, except that no one knew of any Babylock dealerships in San Diego. I remember asking Mary at the Bernina dealership where to find a Babylock dealer because I wanted to buy anEvolve serger. Mary says she doesn’t know.

Well, I don’t tell Bill about Mary, but do say that I’m relieved to have found them, albeit too late. I did buy a Bernina serger because no one could tell me about where to find a Babylock dealership. He says that he doesn’t usually refer people to other shops, it’s just the way dealerships operate, but if they do ask about about Bernina, he refers them to Mary’s shop.

I said, “Yes, Mary is so nice.”

He says, “Yes, she is”

Oh the irony - I bet you can imagine just how hoodwinked I feel right now.

Technology for Your Face

March 17th, 2008

Modern science is wonderful. I love how we keep finding new and better uses for things … and how the gadgets aren’t just for men anymore! I have a new complexion miracle …

I have found the most amazing new tool - the Clarisonic. This thing is awesome! It is basically that Sonicare toothbrush adapted as a face buffer. I tried the demo in the store, it didn’t seem that powerful, but I decided to give it a go anyway. It comes with instructions how to use, the order of scrubbing, and metered beeps to tell you when to move on. Out of faith (maybe desperation) I complied. My face almost immediately was like a baby’s butt!!

My old routine consisted of a regular routine of hodgepodgeacid peels, dermabrasion, Retin-A and Hydroquinone. My skin often burned when I would put on a moisturizer or sun screen. It had always been this way, and I assumed that was due to overly “sensitive” skin.

After a week, I discontinued the use of these “unnatural” things, and went solely to the Clarisonic and a DDF moisturizer (and a very small dose of sprinolactone). Over time, all acne started to disappear. Redness went away, and my skin stayed smooth without having to artificially “burn” it off. After about two months, my skin is (dare I say it?) very care-free.

Perhaps I was just throwing too many things at the problem: persistant adult acne.I do believe there is beauty in simplicity, and for now, this seems to be the most eloquent approach.

Seriously, if I didn’t have one, I would be asking for one for Mother’s Day, Birthday, XMAS, Anniversery or a Hush Bribe. It’s that great!!

No I’m not paid. I bought mine at retail price from Sephora. The manufacturer’s website is www.clarisonic.com.

My New “Precious” - Bernina 1300mds Coverstitch

March 3rd, 2008

I previously posted that I got a Bernina 1300mds (2/3/4/5 thread combo coverstitch serger) for a Valentine’s gift.He bought it on sale - 25% off - I think. It was on order because he wanted me to have a brand new one in the box, and not a floor model. We picked it up from our local dealership - Sew Hut in Clairemont - about a week ago.

I took some pictures of it when I got it home; After all, I’ve never had a BRAND NEW sewing machine/serger in the BOX before!! I even took a picture of the box … It came with three other feet (other than the one on it) that I have no idea how to use, or really what they do for that matter.

It took me almost a week to even turn it on. I just didn’t want to be disappointed, and I was enjoying that “new” smell. That smell is so intimidating, you know? My issues with “new smell” go back to childhood. I rarely got anything new. Most everything was from a garage sale. So when I got a new doll or other toy, I would leave it in the box for a while. Then I would carefully remove it, but still wouldn’t play with it. I would make it clothes, and dress it up, fix any stray hair, and carefully line up my prized posessions on a shelf. I even went through a similiar issue when I got my first “fancy” undergarments from a department store (I was around six at the time) - I would go count and refold them for weeks before I wore them!

I’m finally wearing my “favorite” clothes and shoes, what good are they if they aren’t worn? Mostly because my metabolism seemed to slow this year and if I don’t wear them now, I may never fit into them again …

Oh yeah … back to the machine … It runs like a dream, so quiet, and well designed. I figured out the coverstitch, after about a day of twiddling, and was so impressed by how resiliant the machine was to my numerous errors. The thread did not break once!!

I put the old machine on ebay - Babylock BL402 (Protege with Differential Feed). It is now sold and getting it’s final tuneup before going to it’s new home. I had to sell it right away, or else my hoarding disease would kick in. So let’s send it a fond farewell, and give it an “honorable discharge”.

Shanghai (pt 3) - Touristing the Old City

February 26th, 2008

I actually did the “tourist” experience of Shanghai near the end. I sort of dread crowds, and China is crowded!!

First of all, let me give you a recommendation for a reference, if you ever go there … Beijing & Shanghai, by DK Eyewitness Travel was indispendable. We had others, but didn’t use them. A map is a must have, too. You will NOT find one in English within China. The fold out map Shanghai, China Regional Map, by Periplus TravelMaps is really good. Make sure to get the newest map you can find. Shanghai changes very fast. Please note that cabbies cannot read English maps.

We started our touristing by heading towards the Yuyuan Gardens and Bazaar. We were told if there was a place to get ripped off, this was it. We buried our money in our clothing layers (no, not there), and made a pact to only buy what we had pre-determined to bring home as souvenirs. The Yuyuan Gardens and Bazaar are on the Puxi side of the Huangpu River, andare circled on the map of central Shanghai below.

Valentine’s Day 2008!!

February 14th, 2008

So tell me … are you feelin’ the love today??

I sure am, check out my Valentine’s Gift !! I truly feel loved … I haven’t been able to play with it because it’s on order. I can’t wait !! I’m trying to figure out if I’ll keep my old one or not. It’s really tough because I’m trying to get over my Hoarding Disease. Tell me, honestly … do I REALLY need two if the new one has the digital memory??

It’s cold, windyand rainy today in San Diego - perfect weather for this scarf I whipped up a little while ago:

I was getting worried - the weather was BEAUTIFUL earlier this week - and I wasn’t sure I would be able to wear it! It is composed entirely of a Tunisian single crochet stitch. This stitch is great forintarsia, it makes a great grid. The mottled squares are actually three colors of yarn, changingeach color in both the forward and reverse passes. These three colors interwoven create a”tweedy” look. The yarn is the “cookies and cream”yarn - often used for towels - many of these colors are old and no longer made. I found them while organizing and weeding out my yarn. One is a cream, red and blue variegated, and the others are solid (red and cream).

Dante, Tigger and Stewie send their Valentine’s love.

Shanghai (pt 2) - Fabric Shopping

February 12th, 2008

As I had mentioned before, learning to communicate with the cabbies is important. So I gathered an itinerary of the places I would like to go, and how to say them, as well as their bordering streets.

I really, really wanted to visit the textile mall. It was rumored to be four floors!! The great thing about shopping in Shanghai is that you can negotiate the price of (just about) everything!! It’s basically a back and forth with a caculator, so you don’t really need to know how to say numbers in Chinese, but you should learn. If you speak Chinese, they are less likely to screw you over in pricing. Needless to say - I didn’t have to pay more than I thought something was worth, and in many cases, I paid much less than I was willing to pay. It’s really easy to forget that Chinese Yuan is far less valuable thana dollar …

Here are some photos from the South Bund Textile Mall. Read the rest of this entry »

I’ve been Shanghai-ed!!

February 8th, 2008

Yawn… It’s been a long time since anything has happened here, huh?? I’ve received a few notes here and there from some of you expressing concern. To answer Lucelu - yes, I’ve been very, very busy!! I have much to write about in the weeks coming, but I will start today with my trip to Shanghai! (Donna H - you know I still haven’t written about my trip to Paris and London this summer!!)

I have to say, I love, love, love Shanghai! The people are very friendly (albiet hard to understand), and they really love Western culture. The city of Shanghai is very modern on the Pudong side, with lots of mish mash on the Puxi side. The Pudong area is the “downtown” area of Shanghai, and is China’s central banking and financial district. From what I understand, this area was all farmland about a decade ago… The pictures below are from the hotel window, overlooking Pudong. You can see all of the construction. Shanghai is to host the 2010 world fair, and they are working hard to create a modern, beautiful city. There is poor air quality, but there are aggressive plans in place to clean it up before then.

Pirates, Penguins and a Pumpkin, OH MY!!!

November 3rd, 2007

Hi everyone. I hope everyone had a great Halloween. I’ve not posted in a while as I had been swamped in Halloween costume projects. This year we had twopirates (Pirates of the Carribean costumes bySimplicity), and two Penguins (also bySimplicity).

Thepenguin costume was rather simple and quick, but those pirate costumes werefull of details. Not difficult, but there was lots of “this-and-that”.

Here are my photos. I apologize if some of them are poor, I used my camera-phone for them.
