Shanghai (pt 2) – Fabric Shopping
- I’ve been Shanghai-ed!!
- Shanghai (pt 2) – Fabric Shopping
- Shanghai (pt 3) – Touristing the Old City
As I had mentioned before, learning to communicate with the cabbies is important. So I gathered an itinerary of the places I would like to go, and how to say them, as well as their bordering streets.
I really, really wanted to visit the textile mall. It was rumored to be four floors!! The great thing about shopping in Shanghai is that you can negotiate the price of (just about) everything!! It’s basically a back and forth with a caculator, so you don’t really need to know how to say numbers in Chinese, but you should learn. If you speak Chinese, they are less likely to screw you over in pricing. Needless to say – I didn’t have to pay more than I thought something was worth, and in many cases, I paid much less than I was willing to pay. It’s really easy to forget that Chinese Yuan is far less valuable thana dollar …
Here are some photos from the South Bund Textile Mall.
This place specializes in fashion fabrics only! Don’t expect to find any quilting cotton here! There were rainbows of fine shirtings, silks, knits, sweater knits, cashmere, suitings and silk velvets. Many stalls had finished garments on display. That is because they will MAKE anything you want, simply from a picture! A pair of pants or a shirt, made to your specification, will run you about $10.
I wound up leaving with TWO TRASHBAGS full of fabric!! Here are some highlights of my purchases …
On the next installment – seeing the tourist’s sights of Shanghai!!

OMGosh…that is great! So, did you have them make you a shirt and pants so that when you get home you can rip it apart and use it as a pattern? Did you get anything other than fabric? (Which is Beautiful, btw).
Shanghai is a place most of us will never get to travel to. How great that you got to go!!!

Hi Donna,
I didn’t have them make me anything – the turn around was too long – or else I would have my fiancee’s shirts made there.
I did pick up some artwork, beads, and some other do-dads. I will put those in the next installment – the “tourist” installment.
I was fortunate to go. My fiancee’s company was bought by a Chinese company. He often has to go there for lengthy trips, so he saved up some free miles so I could fly out with him. Once there, it is rather inexpensive.
I feel very blessed to be able to have gone. I have TONS of pictures, so you will be able to experience it too!!
